Turia keen to head home
She’s been a long time in Wellington and now she’s looking forward to going home.
Māori Party co-leader Tariana Turia has announced this parliamentary term will be her last, and she’s retiring at the next election.
That gives her two years to bed in Whānau Ora and other policies she is responsible for.
Mrs Turia, who entered politics in 1996 as a Labour list MP, says getting fully engaged with iwi and whānau will be a relief after the adversarial nature of parliamentary life.
"So I’m really pleased to be going home, I’m please that I’ll to be able to invest time in my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren and hopefully help them to find a better future for themselves because that’s really important right now," she says.
