Smarts and selfless service earn scholarships
Two students from Auckland University have taken this year's prestigious John McLeod scholarship.
The $10,000 award goes to the best of more than 600 students who apply for the Ministry of Health's Hauora Māori scholarship programme.
Eugene Michael from Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Tūwharetoa has completed his sixth year of study for a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, after earlier completing a Bachelor of Pharmacy at Otago University.
He credits a stint working in South Auckland communities with inspiring him to shift to medicine.
The other scholarship went to Reuben Kirk of Ngāi Tūhoe.
Dr John McLeod was known for his work in public and Māori health, and the scholarships named after him go to high academic achievers who also show selfless commitment to their colleagues and communities.
