Mahinga kai inspiration for lake sculpture
The use by Māori of Hamilton’s Lake Rotorua as a mahinga kai or food source is the inspiration behind a new sculpture being built beside the lake.
Arc by Lonnie Hutchinson is a waharoa or gateway incorporating three dimensional kōwhaiwhai forms, in the Ngāi Tahu-Samoan artist’s signature cut-out style.
It’s built of Cor-ten steel so it will change colour over time.
It's due to be completed by February.
Arc is a gift from the Mesh Sculpture Hamilton arts trust, which last month gifted the city the stainless steel sculpture Te Pūmanawa ō Te Whenua – Beat Connection by Seung Yul Oh.
