Leadership scholarships to boost boarding schools
The Government has created 90 new scholarships to help boost the number of students attending Māori boarding schools.
The Puawaitanga scholarships will cover all boarding and school fees for Hato Paora, Hato Petera, Hukarere, St Joseph's, Te Aute or Turakina Maori Girls College.
Because they are awarded to young people who demonstrate leadership potential, there is an extra $1500 every year towards costs associated with developing the student's leadership talent.
Associate Education Minister Pita Sharples, a Te Aute old boy, says Māori boarding schools have a long and proud history and a tradition of fostering academic, cultural, and social excellence, and producing successive generations of Māori leaders.
The first scholarships will be available for the 2014 school year.
