Lawyer and playwright Whiti Hereaka has won this year’s Bruce Mason Playwriting Award, which is given to recognise early success.
To encourage the winner’s continued exploration of the theatre medium, the prize comes with a $10,000 cash grant.
Heraka, from Ngāti Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa, won an Adam New Zealand Play Award in 2010 for Te Kaupoi, and again in 2011 for Rona and Rabbit on the Moon.
Murray Lynch from the playwrights’ agency Playmarket says her plays are poetic, poignant, and wildly imaginative.
