Kapiti council puts limits on wāhi tapu change
Forty property owners in Kapiti have been told their land includes wāhi tapu that they can’t subdivide, alter existing buildings or subdivide.
The sacred sites, which will be listed in the Kapiti Coast District Council’s new district plan, were considered the most important of the 400 sites identified through consultation with Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Toa and Ngāti Raukawa.
One owner says he intends to appeal the designation because it has been in European ownership and farmed since 1830, and the previous owners never mentioned a pa or urupa on the land.
