Fracking report a high risk option
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says many Māori will be disappointed at the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment's report on fracking.
Ms Turei says while the Greens don't challenge Jan Wright's interpretation of the science round hydraulic fracturing to release underground hydrocarbons, they share her concern at the lack of regulation.
"Until there is a strong regulatory framework. Until there is some certainty of safety and proper systems to prevent contamination and all those things, we shouldn't be doing it here. We shouldn't be allowing people to take the risk while we worK through all the processes, so that's where we disagree with her. We think there should be a moratorium until the regulations are put into place but she doesn't." she says.
Ms Turei says while some Māori support fracking because they want to get jobs in the industry, there are very few such jobs and little economic benefit for local communities.
