Hundertwasser Centre to include Māori gallery
A dedicated gallery for Māori art will be included in the Hundertwasser Art Centre planned for Whangarei.
A Māori advisory panel for the project has been appointed, consisting of leading Māori scholars, artists and kaumatua including Elizabeth Ellis, Patu Hohepa, Jonathan Mane-Wheoki, Allen Wihongi, Shane Cotton, Lisa Reihana and Manos Nathan.
Austrian-born Friedensreich Hundertwasser spent part of every year in Northland, but so far the only sign of his presence is the world-famous Kawakawa Public Toilets.
The $13.7 million Centre in Whangarei’s waterfront Town Basin will be built from plans drawn up by the late artist, and it’s expected to draw in 150,000 visitors a year.
Advisory panel chair Elizabeth Ellis says Hundertwasser wanted a Māori Gallery in the centre.
She says it will be an exciting forum for Māori creativity and form an invaluable global link with other indigenous communities.
