King’s intervention has long precedent
Former Tainui executive chair Tukoroirangi Morgan is defending the Māori King's intervention in the tribe's leadership battle.
King Tuheitia has drawn fire from some in the iwi for last week's open letter to Tainui members, which included an endorsement of Mr Morgan to chair the parliament, Te Kauhanganui.
Mr Morgan says the King is showing the fighting spirit of his ancestors.
"In Te Wherowhero’s time and Tawhiao's time he fought the Crown at Rangiriri. The leaders of the Kingitanga, all of them have come down from their position and got dirty on the ground and led by example and the king has showed that with water, he's showed that with Kohanga and today he decided enough was enough, far too long we have been scrapping together," he says.
