Dame June Mariu is crediting the communities she has worked for her new honour.

The Māori Women’s Welfare League past president had received her title at Government House, but she held a special investiture at Hoani Waititi Marae in West Auckland.

She says she was happy to share her award with the people because you don’t do things alone.

“You can only be so grateful you’ve got good friends that believe in the same things and have worked with out. You are the one that got the award and you have to share it because it’s not just me,” Dame June says.
