There's more Māori and more older Māori.
Statistics New Zealand estimates there are now 682,200 people in the country who identify as Māori, or 15.4 percent of the population – up from 15.1 percent a decade ago.
There are about 5,000 Māori over the age of 80, double the number in 2002, and Statistics estimates the proportion of Māori men living longer has also been growing faster than average.
The total New Zealand population is estimated at 4,433,000 as at 30 June 2013.
