Portable pool to keep tamariki safe
Water Safety New Zealand hopes a portable swimming pool will help cut down the number of Māori children who drown.
The pool, which has been donated by New Zealand Post, will be rotated around rural centres over the next five years as part of a programme to boost the water safety skills of Māori youth.
Water Safety chief executive Matt Claridge says it will allow the organisation to teach water safety and survival skills in places where aquatic facilities are inaccessible or unsuitable for education
He says Maori consistently rate as one of the most at-risk groups in terms of drowning fatalities.
The pool will be shared by kura in the Waikato, the Bay of Plenty, East Coast / Tairawhiti and Hawkes Bay.
