Taupo District Council has agreed to change the names of 14 streets and three reserves in Turangi.
Tongariro-Turangi Community Board chair Gary Keepa says local hapu Ngāti Turangitukua wanted the town's names to reflect their whakapapa.
He says when the Ministry of Works built the town in the early 1960s, it used some of the names submitted by the hapu, but dropped the prefix Te from several names and replaced others with the names of engineers who worked on the Tongariro power scheme.
