Tuwharetoa kaimahi Stephen Asher dies
One of the key architects of Ngāti Tuwharetoa's treaty claims and its modern prosperity has joined his ancestors.
Stephen Asher died earlier this week and was buried in Tokaanu yesterday.
His last public appearance was at last weekend's conference in Taupo of the Federation of Māori Authorities, which he helped set up 25 years ago.
Mr Asher was a former secretary of the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board and a trustee on the Lake Taupo Forest Trust and on many whanau land trusts.
More recently he was secretary of the working group that negotiated the Central North Island forestry settlement.
