Te Taou told to go back to Ngāti Whatua for settlement share
Its third strike and you’re out for Auckland iwi Te Taou.
The Waitangi Tribunal has rejected a third application by Paora Kawharu, also known as Lou Paul, for an urgent hearing to challenge the Ngati Whatua ki Kaipara and Auckland Collective Settlements.
Mr Paul has argued that the way Ngati Whatua is constituted leaves out some Te Taou whakapapa lines, so the hapu needs a separate settlement or it will lose mana, rangatiratanga, and assets.
The tribunal says the Auckland Collective Settlement specifically recognises the group, and it's also too late for it to step in because the settlement bills are now before parliament.
