Hikoi highlights worsening housing crisis

Te Tai Tokerau MP Hone Harawira is promising to use his arrest at a Glen Innes housing protest to highlight issues of housing, homelessness and poverty.
Some of those arrested at the same time were part of yesterday's hikoi to parliament against Housing New Zealand's state house removal programmes.
The Mana leader says Housing Minister Phil Heatley's arguments that the houses are the wrong size and in the wrong places doesn't wash.
"Government thinks it's a case of moving things on a checkerboard but it's not like that. It's about communities. This is the destruction of community spirit. I congratulate those who are making a stand. I congratulate those who continue to highlight the issue because the housing crisis is worsening all around the country," Mr Harawira says.
He says Kahungunu chair Ngahiwi Tomoana's participation on the hikoi with people affected by Housing New Zealand's clearance of houses in the Napier suburb of Maraenui shows some iwi leaders recognise that iwi development isn't just about corporate development.
