FOMA internship programme ambitious experiment

Otago University's deputy vice-chancellor for research and enterprise expects a summer internship involving the Federation of Māori Authorities and Crown Research Institution Industrial Research will attract more Māori into the sciences.
Three Otago undergraduate and postgraduate Māori students have been picked for the 10-week internships, which involve working in Māori land-based businesses as well as in the CRI.
Professor Richard Blaikie says it's a great way to add value to study.
"Here we already run a number of internship programmes through for example our business school which gives students that experience as they're going through their study of what career options are out there and it helps them come back for their final years of study and guides their subject choices, guide some of their other social and cultural activities through the year to help them prepare to be better people for those businesses," he says.
Professor Blaikie says the students will report back to the university on the value of the pilot.
