Champions line up for sports awards
The Māori sports awards are coming up, and organisers are promising an exceptional line up at Auckland’s Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre on 24th of November.
In contention for the top award are canoeist Lisa Carrington and Paralympian swimmer Cameron Lestle, who both brought back gold from London, and rower Storm Uru, who won bronze.
Dick Garrett from Te Tohu Tākaro ō Aotearoa Charitable Trust says it's a far cry from the first event in 1991, when there was only one world champion, and seven or eight iwi and 10 sports represented in the nominations.
This year's finalists include 22 Olympians, three Paralympians, 10 individual world champions and four world champion teams.
