Kapa haka given academic scrutiny
Kapa haka experts will be out in force in Rotorua today for the first academic event devoted to the Māoriperforming arts.
The Nga Mana Whakairo a Toi symposium at the Rotorua Convention Centre is a joint venture between Te Whare Wānanga ō Awanuiarangi and Te Matatini.
Haka icons, exponents and rising starts have been invited to wānanga, debate and share their experiences not just about what happens on stage but how it contributes to Matauranga Māori and Māori development.
There will also be discussion on the importance for the preservation of tribal identity of festivals like Te Ahurei ā Tūhoe, the difference between writing waiata for competitive and non-competitive situations, and the best way to construct poi.
