Ngapuhi Rūnanga scraps term limits
Te Runanga ā Iwi ō Ngapuhi Rūnanga has voted to scrap its term limit on executive positions, opening the way for chair Sonny Tau to stay on.
The constitutional changes were passed sometimes at a heated annual meeting in Kaikohe over the weekend.
The rūnanga reported an operating loss of $1.3 million on income of $14.7 million because of the costs running the settlement entity Tuhoronuku.
It expects the Crown to refund some of Tuhoronuku’s expenses once it accepts its mandate to negotiate, but that has not happened so far.
Mr Tau reported that the tribe’s assets had grown by $6 million to $43 million, because it has revalued its shares in fisheries settlement company Aotearoa Fisheries as they are now paying dividends.
