Otautahi community wanting kura support
Christchurch Māori want to see some of the billion dollar investment going into the quake-hit city’s education sector used to strengthen provision of te reo education.
About 90 people attended a hui yesterday to discuss the Education Ministry’s plan to close seven of the 10 schools offering Māori medium or bilingual classes.
Organiser Melanie Riwai-Couch says people who attended the hui believed the closures could have a negative impact on future generations of te reo learners.
She says more than half of those who responded to an online survey opposed the proposed merger of the city’s two kura kaupapa, Te Whanau Tahi and Te Kura Whakapumau Te Reo Tuturu Ki Waitaha.
