Statisticians ponder shape of whānau
Statistics New Zealand is reviewing the way it asks questions of Māori in advance of a major study on Māori well being.
Next year’s Te Kupenga survey will ask 5000 Māori individuals a range of questions about their whānau.
Deputy government statistician says in advance, Statistics has run a pilot survey to identify any potential problems.
A research report out this week, Kei te pewhea tō whānau, says one of the big issues is the size of whānau.
Some people just included immediate household, while others see their whānau as having 50, 100 or even 500 people.
Some also include non-blood relatives.
Mr Galvin says Te Kupenga will gather useful information for social service providers and policymakers.
