Steam-cooked food fest gets boost from power lines company

Expect to hear more about the Kawhia Kai Festival as the result of sponsorship boost from its local electricity lines company, Waipa Networks.
Organiser Hinga Whiu says the annual celebration of traditional and contemporary Maori kai, which is held the weekend closest to Waitangi Day, is already rated among the top 10 `must-sees’ in New Zealand by the Lonely Planet travel guide.
He says the volunteer organising committee has struggled to find the funds to develop and market the event.
He says the festival is hugely significant to Kawhia and is a key Waitangi event.
People coming from all over the country to sample toroi or marinated mussels and puha, Creamed Paua and Kina, Inanga, Kanga Wai/Pirau or fermented corn and koki or shark liver pate, but the big seller is always the hangi produced by Kawhia’s four marae.
