Ngati Awa is looking to bring customary and commercial fishers together in a single National Eel Association.
Spokesperson John Hohapata-Oke says he’s keen to see commercial farming of eels, freeing up the wild stocks for customary use.
He says New Zealand is one of the last places in the world where eel is harvested from the wild, and stocks in some catchments are falling fast.
About $6 million of eels are exported every year.
