Ngati Apa is mourning its former chair Laurie Duckworth, who played a major role in upholding the tribe’s mana in the top of the South Island.
He died aged 87 after a stroke.
The former deputy mayor of Blenheim had major input into the establishment of Omaka Marae.
With his late partner Kath Hemi, he also helped research and fund the tribe’s Waitangi Tribunal claims.
He was awarded a Queen's Service Medal in 1986 and a New Zealand Order of Merit in 2010 for services to Maori and the community.
