Content management system gets Maori skin
One of the fastest-growing web content management systems, the Wellington-based SilverStripe, has launched a Maori translation of its latest version.
Because the software is open source, the translated phrases are available for anyone to download freely to reuse for commercial or personal use.
Ian Cormack of Taumata Maori Language Services, who led the project, says it’s common for software to include multiple language options, and that increasingly includes Te Reo Maori.
“It’s vocabulary that has grown up around computer technology and Maori. Every day there are new words being created, so having it there in front of you on the screen just helps to bring those words into the language and part of everyday conversation,” he says.
Mr Cormack says he is also working on localising the new Windows 8 operating system and Microsoft Office.
