Pouakani sees unfinished business with river

A Waikato iwi says the Government has to sort out unfinished business before it sells shares in Mighty River Power.
The company, which has dams on the Waikato River, will be the first to be partially privatised once the current consultation is complete.
Tamati Cairns says Pouakani still hasn’t has a response to the Supreme Court finding that the iwi owns a 35 kilometre stretch of the Waikato river bed adjoining its traditional land.
“On that stretch of water you have a series of dams managed by Mighty River Power. There seems no sense in the Crown pursuing a sale given that we still have unfinished business that may led to something totally different to what they are suggesting,” Mr Tamati Cairns says.
He says the Government is arguing over ownership rather than understanding the Maori concept of mana.
