National list MP Tau Henare has put his hand up to become the speaker if Lockwood Smith moves on to become New Zealand’s representative in London.
He says his experience as a member of parties small and big, as well as his work chairing the Maori affairs select committee, has prepared him for the job.
His clashes with past speakers have also given him an appreciation of what the job is about, which is to uphold the mana of Parliament.
The first and only Maori speaker was the late Sir Peter Tapsell from 1993 to 1996.
