Te Rarawa ups stakes in tribunal battle
Te Rarawa has asked the Waitangi Tribunal to make binding recommendations that would require the Crown to hand over land in its far north rohe.
Runanga chair Haami Piripi says it’s a defensive move brought on by last week’s resumption hearing triggered by neighbouring iwi Ngati Kahu.
All the land being sought is already included in Te Rarawa’s pending settlement.
Some of it was also included in the package demanded by Ngati Kahu.
Mr Piripi says as an applicant, Te Rarawa will be in better place and able to stand up for its rights than as an interested party to another iwi’s action.
