It’s a home town showing for Massey University’s Te Putahi a Toi School of Maori studies, with work by three current and former staff members on display at Te Manawa in Palmerston North.
Israel Birch, Shane Cotton and Robert Jahnke are all highly regarded New Zealand artists.
Opening the show, former school dean Sir Mason Durie said the exhibition’s theme, whakawhiti or transmission from one person to another, sums up how art and the school work,
He says in their own ways the three celebrate New Zealand’s cultural identity and reflect the country’s state of evolution.
