Storyboards give insight to Taranaki history
Members of the 13-iwi Tamaki Collective are taking a low key approach to the signing the Deed of Settlement for historic treaty claims in the Auckland region.
Tomorrow’s ceremony at Auckland War Memorial Museum featuring Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson will be preceded by an update on water claims.
The deed was ratified by almost 95 percent of those who voted, and a similar percentage endorsed the bodies that will be responsible for the cultural and commercial aspects of the settlement.
The deal gives the 13 iwi and hapu joint ownership of 14 maunga, and provides for the gifting and gift-back of four islands in the Hauraki Gulf.
The iwi will also have the first right to buy surplus Crown property in the region for the next 170 years.
