The Education Review Office will continue to keep a close eye on Hato Petera, after its latest report gives a tick to the Auckland Catholic Maori boarding school’s turnaround plans.
The ERO had a special review in 2009 and a full review in 2010 after a period of upheaval, but it says the appointment of permanent principal John Matthews, a new chairperson, and new caregivers in the hostel have had a significant impact on the culture of learning, behavioral issues, and the quality of teaching in the school.
The roll has dropped to 99, meaning the number of teachers had to be cut.
It says academic results compared well with achievement in schools of similar deciles, and with national trends, but the high number of stand downs and suspensions are of concern.
The ERO expects to conduct another review within the next two years.
