Auckland mayor Len Brown isn’t sure his city needs to take the lead in making Te reo Maori part of the compulsory curriculum.
Council support for teaching Maori in every classroom is one of the goals of the Maori plan for Auckland put up by the Independent Maori Statutory board.
Mr Brown says in his school visits he’s hearing reo Maori everywhere.
“Let’s have a discussion about making it compulsory, but it’s not just a discussion here in Tamaki Makaurau, it’s one across the whole of Aotearoa New Zealand,” he says.
