Rheumatic fever champion wins service award
The Whangaroa woman driving the National Rheumatic Fever campaign has won this year’s Public Health Tu Rangatira mo te Ora award for leadership in Maori health development.
PHA spokesperson Lisa McNab says Helen Herbert of Ngati Pikiao and Whakatohea got involved in hauora because of her experience as a mother of a child with rheumatic fever.
Over the past decade her commitment has taken her from working on the Whangaroa Rheumatic Fever Project to the Ngati Hine Health Trust to her current role leading the prevention of rheumatic fever in Maori communities around the country.
