Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology has launched its first kaumatua class for Te Reo Maori.
Twelve elders, most in their 70s and one in her 80s, have signed up for the class.
Maori education director Takuta Ferris says the course was started after an approach from Ngati Koata.
He says a motivating factor was the opening in July of the first kura kaupapa in the top of the South Island, which several of the kaumatua’s mokopuna will attend.
