Ngapuhi signs MOU with CYFS to protect tamariki

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says yesterday’s signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ngapuhi and Child Youth and Family should lead to better protection for Northland children.
She says Ngapuhi was the first to take up the challenge she laid down two years ago for iwi to own the problem of violence within their families.
She says since that speech to iwi leaders there have been 12 deaths and many more cases of neglect.
Ms Bennett says the government’s White Paper on vulnerable children to be released in October will provide iwi with more tools to better protect their children.
